Kaan Chain (Ear Chain): What It Is, Styles and How to Wear It

Sirini Jewellery

A kaan chain, also called an ear chain, kaanchain or sahara, is a fine chain that runs from an earring up to a hook or pin in the hair. It does two jobs: it shares the weight of the earring so a heavy jhumka does not pull on the lobe, and it frames the side of the face the way a maang tikka frames the forehead. This guide explains the styles, how to wear one, and what Sirini has in stock with prices.

What a kaan chain is

The word kaan means ear. A kaan chain starts at the earring, usually a stud or a small jhumka, and loops up and back to a hair hook. Because the hook is anchored in the hair, the chain is held in place and the earring is supported, which is why it suits long wedding functions where heavy earrings tire the ears. It is a traditional bridal and festive piece and sits alongside the maang tikka and the passa in a full head-and-face look.

The four main styles

Single-strand pearl line

One fine line of hand-strung pearls arcs from a stud up to the hair hook. It is the lightest style and the easiest to wear with an everyday saree or a lighter festive outfit.

Multi-chain fan

A stud with several fine pearl and gold chains fanning up to the hair, covering the whole side of the face. This is the full bridal statement, and it keeps its shape best with the hair fully pinned.

Bead or ball chain

Faceted glass balls strung between gold spacers add colour and a little weight, so they suit coordinated outfits such as green, ruby or maroon for Navratri and festive parties.

Jhumki-fringed chain

A double-strand chain finished with a row of small gold jhumki bells fringed with pearl beads. It sits along the hairline and moves slightly with the head, which suits weddings and receptions, and pairs well with a plain gold jhumka.

How to wear a kaan chain

  • Wear the hair up or half-up. The hook needs hair to grip, and a fan of chains keeps its shape only when the hair is pinned.
  • Keep the neckline quieter. The chain already fills the space beside the face, so pair it with a close choker or a plain neck rather than a long haar. See haar, rani haar and long set if you are choosing the necklace.
  • Let the earring be small. A stud or small jhumka works best, because the chain is the detail.
  • Put it on last, after hair, make-up and perfume, and take it off first. Pearls and foil-set stones are the most sensitive part, and the care guide has the full routine.

What these are made of

Sirini's kaan chains are handcrafted in our own workshop in Santacruz West, Mumbai, in 18–22K gold plating over a brass base, with hand-strung pearls, Kundan stones or glass beads. They are fashion and imitation jewellery, not solid gold, and the pearls are shell or glass rather than natural pearls.

Common questions

What is a kaan chain?

A fine chain that runs from the earring to a hook or pin in the hair, so the earring is supported and the side of the face is framed. It is also called an ear chain, kaanchain or sahara.

What does kaan mean?

Kaan means ear in Hindi, so kaan chain means ear chain.

How do I keep a kaan chain in place?

Anchor the hook in pinned hair, with the hair up or half-up. Loose, very fine hair gives the hook little to hold.

Can I wear a kaan chain with a necklace?

Yes, but keep the necklace close, such as a choker, or wear a plain neck. A long haar competes with the chain.

Is a kaan chain only for brides?

No. Lighter styles such as a single pearl line or a bead chain work for festive wear and receptions, and the fuller multi-chain fan is the bridal statement.

Is this real gold or real pearl?

No. These are gold-plated imitation pieces over brass with shell or glass pearls and Kundan-style stones.

What does a kaan chain cost at Sirini?

From Rs 520 to Rs 3,240 today. Shipping across India is Rs 200, free on orders of Rs 2,999 and above, with Cash on Delivery on eligible orders.
